SENECA FALLS, NY — A new buzz brought dozens of wine trail tourists to Montezuma Winery's back production room Saturday, October 11th as co-owner and winemaker Bill Martin unveiled his newest product.

BEE Vodka, distilled entirely from New York state honey, was released to the public, and Martin joined center stage with state Sen. Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, Seneca County, to cut the ribbon on Montezuma's new sister operation, Hidden Marsh Distillery. "This vodka is made from 100 percent honey. It is the only one like it in the U.S.," said the 32-year-old Martin, who then described three years of unsuccessfully lobbying state lawmakers in Albany to create a law that would enable his family's business to distill spirits and sell them on the premises.

There are currently only three licensed farm distilleries in the state, and Hidden Marsh is the first in the Finger Lakes region, according to the New York State Liquor Authority. A handful of Finger Lakes wineries do make and sell brandies, but they do so under a difference class of license, explained Martin. Another farm distillery is slated to open in 2009 on Seneca Lake. Finger Lakes Distilling in Burdett, Schuyler County, will produce vodka, brandies, gin, whiskies and cordials, said president and owner Brian McKenzie. He said he looks forward to having the same synergy with Hidden Marsh and other future distilleries as the region's wineries currently enjoy.

The new honey vodka is made with a Christian Carl column pot still imported from Germany. The family invested about $100,000 in the new venture, said Martin. Hidden Marsh released an apple brandy in June, and a honey brandy and other cordials are due to be released before the end of the year. A 750 ml bottle of BEE Vodka sells for $48.99; a 375 ml bottle of brandy is $28.99.
