advice on starting a Distillery.

Rob Smith's picture

I am very seriously interested in starting a distillery. I have a recipe, I know how to produce an excellent product. However, I am having a hard time finding out the licenses, health department codes, ect. needed to get started.
Everything on the internet is about how to make stuff in your bathtub or is geered toward the big companies. If anyone knows any resources, I would be very greatfull.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob, I don't know where

Rob,

I don't know where you're at. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission posts their state requirements:

http://www.oregon.gov/OLCC/craft_distilleries.shtml

Your state may have similar requirements. This is in addition to licensing from the U.S. federal government. Info here:

I'll start posting the state agency links on this page as well.

How's it going so far? Have you started the license application process yet?

Just a few questions for you:

What state? Each has different laws
What size of distillery?
Who is your target market?
What type of distribution?
Do you need to buy equipment?

From what I can gather, this is a very new market. Many states do not yet have the correct laws in place to govern over this industry. If you are the first one to embark on this journey within the state you live in, you may have an uphill battle. My best advice is to develop a sound plan and then start lobbying for support from friends, local politicians, investors, etc.
